Orphaned by her father and mother, Jane Eyre grows up in the home of a rich aunt, who never misses a chance to remind her of her condition as a poor relative. To complete her education, she was sent to Lowood School, a dreary institution for orphaned children. Years later, having obtained her teaching diploma, she is employed as governess to Edward Rochester’s daughter, Adele. For the first time in her new home Jane feels safe. The landlord’s attraction to her also contributes to this. After some time Jane is summoned to the bedside of her dying aunt, who gives her a letter from an uncle, John Eyre, who has left her a large inheritance. Back in Rochester’s house, he declares his love for her and the day of the wedding arrives. A lawyer bursts in during the ceremony. He declares that Rochester is already married to another woman. The mystery of Thornfield Hall, Rochester’s sumptuous home, is revealed. Fifteen years earlier, Rochester was forced to marry Bertha, a rich heiress, ignoring her madness. Despite her love for Edward, Jane feels she must leave Thornfield and settle elsewhere. Driven by an irresistible urge, she returns to Thornfield, where she finds only ruins, because Bertha, in an excess of madness, has set fire to the house. In an attempt to save her, Rochester has lost his sight. Finally reunited, Edward and Jane swear never to leave each other again.

In addition to Visconti, between the 1940s and 1950s, he worked alongside famous directors such as Antonioni, De Sica and Rossellini. The first film he directed in 1958 was Camping, a sentimental comedy. He showed a more personal style in The Taming Of The Shrew in 1967 and Romeo and Juliet in 1968, Shakespearean transcriptions made with innovative taste and figurative elegance. His later literary adaptations, Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna in 1972 and Hamlet in 1990, are famous. In 1993 he returned to cinema with Storia di una capinera, from Giovanni Verga. Between 1996 and 1999 he directed the films Jane Eyre and Un tè con Mussolini, the latter partly autobiographical. In December 1999, he returned to direct the opening ceremony of the Holy Year for television. In 2002, again for the cinema, he made Callas Forever, freely inspired by the life of Maria Callas.
