In 1908 Giacomo Puccini (Riccardo J. Moretti) is composing La fanciulla del West. In front of his villa in Torre del Lago, the “Chalet da Emilio” looms above the water. Behind the counter the beautiful Giulia (Federica Chezzi), is serving wine and smiles. She is a cousin of Doria Manfredi, a young maid in Puccini’s home. One day, at the end of the summer, Doria (Tania Squillario) surprises Fosca (Debora Mattiello), the musician’s step-daughter, in bed with her lover, Guelfo Civinini. Worried that Doria will give away her secret, Fosca begings to check Doria’s every movement and sensing there is an understanding between the maid and her stepfather, forces her mother Elvira (Giovanna Daddi) to spy on Puccini. One night she sees him with a young girl and although she cannot see her face, she is sure it is Doria. While Puccini is completely engrossed with the composition of his opera and uses every possible excuse he can to pursue his relationship with Giulia, Elvira takes every occasion she can to ruin the reputation of poor Doria, her only crime having been a messenger of love between the Maestro and her cousin. Unable to stand the shame, Doria decides to commit suicide.

Paola Baroni
Born in Verona in 1961, she studied drama from 1988 to 1990 at the Scuola Regionale di Attività Attoriali under the direction of Ezio Maria Caserta. Her debut in1989 at the Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza was followed by a stage career ranging from plays and monologues to poetry recitals. She began her collaboration with Paolo Benvenuti in 1998 as assistant director and acting coach for Gostanza da Libbiano. She co-wrote the story and screenplay for Secret Files. Baroni moved to Pisa in 2003 and started a seminar for children, “Facciamo un film”. The experience led to the production of the short film L'incubo di un maestro, entirely written, filmed, performed, directed, and edited by these children. In 2006, Paola Baroni made her stage directing debut with the play Pietro Calamandrei: in difesa di Danilo Dolci which she wrote based on the pleadings of the great jurist at the 1956 trial of the famous sociologist. Puccini and the Girl represents Baroni and Benvenuti’s most extensive collaboration to date.
