In Beneath the Same Moon, Neapolitan director Carlo
Luglio gives us a close-up view of the hardships faced by
two young Rom gypsies living on the outskirts of Naples.
While one struggles to earn a living, the other is tempted
by easier gains. They are part of an unsavory environment
run by local mafia lords at war with each other. Luglio’s
drama draws a parallel between the squalor of life inside
and outside the Rom camp, emphasizing the people’s enormous
vitality and love of life that gets them through nearly
impossible situations and, in the end, sorrowfully pushes
them to move on.
