The story of Sicilian Placido Rizzotto is the stuff of folk legend. As a young boy, Rizzotto watched helplessly as the local carabiniere took his father away and as a young man, a partisan fighting the Nazis, he watched, powerless, as fellow fighters were hanged. It was in this period that Rizzotto came to the forefront. Postwar Sicily has become a hive of corruption: the mafia have undermined the Unions and now set out to claim the land of men killed in vendettas. Rizzotto organizes the workers to resist tyranny, urging them to occupy the land and challenge the local powers. But when Rizzotto falls in love with Lia, the film turns into tragedy with Shakespearian overtones. Lia’s family violently opposes the union and sets out to destroy it with a ruthlessness that defies comprehension. Lia pleads with Placido to protect himself and leave the city, but he is on a mission, nothing will deter him from what he thinks is right and just. The revenge exacted on the young idealist by Lia’s family is as chilling as it is methodical, not even Lia is not spared their wrath.
